Sigiriya, or Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. It can be found in the Matale District in the north near the town of Dambulla. Name given to a historical and archeological site dominated by a 200-meter (660-foot) tall rock column. The ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Culavamsa, states that King Kashyapa (477-495 AD) chose this site as his new capital. On top of the rock, he built his palace and decorated it with colorful frescoes. He built an enormous lion-shaped gateway on a small plateau halfway up this rock. This structure is the source of the name for this place — Sinhagiri or the Lion Rock. (An etymology similar to Sinhapura – the Sanskrit term for Singapore, Lion City).
